A business might not own the IP its value depends on. If it was built by a freelancer, an agency, or a co-founder before anyone thought to paper it properly and transfer it into the business, that gap goes unnoticed until it matters: a funding round or sale where you need to prove ownership, or a competitor using something close enough to your brand that you need to act, and you discover the registration was never done.

That means making sure IP created by employees, contractors and agencies is properly assigned to the business, and registering and protecting trademarks in the markets that matter. It also means licensing IP in or out on terms that hold up commercially as well as legally, and acting quickly when someone infringes or challenges what you own.
